An astonishing artificer of the imagination, Hugo Hiriart has
been a novelist, playwright, essayist, theatre director, screenplay writer, and
visual artist. Born in Mexico City in
1942, he received the Xavier Villaurrutia Prize for Galaor in
1972. This first step into narrative
was followed up by Cuadernos de Gofa (Gofa’s Notebooks) and La
destrucción de todas las cosas (The Destruction of Everything). Hiriart is the author of a dozen
works for the stage, among the most notable are Ginecomaquia; Hécuba, la
perra (Hecuba, the Bitch); Intimidad (Intimacy) and Ámbar (Amber),
some of which have been filmed. His
essays are considered exemplary in recent Mexican literature, especially: Disertación sobre las telarañas (A
Dissertation on Spider-Webs), Sobre la naturaleza de los sueños (On the Nature
of Dreams) and Los dientes eran el piano (The Teeth Were
the Piano); the latter published by Tusquets Editores.
