Escaping something unmentionable, Javier, an older neurologist, takes a
car trip towards the mountains when, in the dark of the night, he runs over a wild
boar that destroys part of his vehicle. The accident forces him to remain
several days in Sinia, a town built up right by a reservoir in the Pyrenees of Aragón. Unexpectedly, the neighbors
will involve him in a card game and offer him their help, especially Marina, and
energetic and attractive woman who will allow him to stay at her house. Javier
will soon discover that, like others in town, she too is weighed down by a
secret story that occurred in the old town now submerged underwater. The nine
days he spends in the mountains, among people who have rebuilt their lives and
with whom he will live the excitement of nature and the intrigue of human
relations, will allow Javier to face his own fears and understand those of
others.
Joaquín Berges was born in Zaragoza in 1965. He has a degree in Spanish Language and
Literature from the University of Zaragoza. He started his career as a writer
with El club de los estrellados
(The Club of the Starred), a surprising first novel whose agility and
freshness revealed a wonderful storyteller. It was awarded the prize for the Best Debut Novel written in Spanish in 2009
at the Festival du Premier Roman in Chambéry
(France). His following novels, Vive como puedas (Live as You Can,
2011) – selected by FNAC bookshops as
“new talent” and a tribute to the genre of classic screwball comedies brought
to the present day – and Un estado del malestar (A State of Unrest, 2012), demonstrated
his talent for comic novels.
